Match Report | Burnham FC v Wembley FC (League)

Burnham FC 8 – Wembley FC 0 –   12th August 2023 – Dean Butler

Burnham got their new league season off to a flying start with a very comprehensive 8 goal home win.

The game got off to a fairly even start with both teams having plenty of the ball, the first effort from distance came when Jack Penton unleased a fierce shot from distance which rattled the corner of the goal frame and despite claims the shot had actually gone in the ref waved play on. Soon after another long distance effort from George Butler called the Wembley keeper into a good save.  The Blues had to wait until the half hour mark to make the break through when JP was hauled down in the box and the ref didn’t hesitate to point to the spot, Leo Decabo stepped up and tucked the ball into the bottom corner to put the Blues 1 up.  The goal gave the home team the impetus to go on and end the half on a high  , the second goal followed 10 minutes later when Rory Merrick fired an unstoppable effort from the edge of the 18 yard box into the top corner, with only a couple of minutes until the break the Blues managed 2 further quick fire goals both from Jabir Laraba, the first after breaking through one on one with the keeper and slotting home the second a minute later with a comfortable finish into the bottom right hand corner.

HT Burnham 4 – Wembley 0

The second half started at the same tempo as the first half finished with Burnham looking to add to their tally from the kick off and it only took 5 minutes for Jabir to complete a ten minute hattrick, after some good play down the left wing Firas Chniba he rolled a pass across the 6 yard box to Jabir to slot home. With the home team still dominating the game a 6th goal and second penalty came after an hour, Firas this time converts the penalty he won after being brought down in the box. A flurry of substitutions with 20 to go for the home team saw one the subs Dan Price get the 7th after the ball bounced around the Wembley box he poked home from close range, not quite finished Burnham added an 8th goal when Jack Penton finally got his goal after twice hitting post from distance earlier in the game, his effort finished comfortably after an initial good save from the Wembley keeper.
