FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round, Burnham FC U18s 3–3 Edgware & Kingsbury U18s (Edgware win 8–7 on penalties)
Burnham FC Under-18s were cruelly denied progression in the FA Youth Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Edgware & Kingsbury Under-18s at The 1878 Stadium on Monday night.
The tie, which kicked off at 7:45pm, began at a frenetic pace with Burnham on top from the outset. The home side struck the woodwork three times in the opening half-hour, before finally breaking through when Tommy Fosh surged clear of the Edgware defence to slot home. Moments later, Burnham doubled their advantage as Ramon Barrow converted to give the Blues a deserved 2–0 half-time lead.
Edgware responded strongly after the restart, quickly halving the deficit and then drawing level with two well-taken goals. Burnham showed their resilience and regained the lead when Arthur Nkrumah capitalised on a chance inside the box, restoring their advantage at 3–2.
The hosts looked set for victory, but in the final seconds of normal time Edgware snatched an equaliser, sending the tie into penalties.
The shootout was a tense affair, going all the way to the eighth round. Burnham saw their third attempt saved, only for their goalkeeper to produce a superb stop of his own to keep the contest alive. Ultimately, Edgware held their nerve to edge through 8–7 and book their place in the next round.
Burnham, who can take great credit from their spirited performance, will now turn their attention to the Allied Counties Football League Cup, where they face a first-round trip to Ash United on Wednesday night.
